An Engagement Session Gone... Right?
It happened to me. I know that it can happen to anyone, but it finally happened to me.
I get to the location, check and double check my gear, format my cards, and get the couple in place for the first few photos.
Then... my mind goes blank.
I can't think of a single other pose than the classic twirl. I stand there awkwardly, where I'm normally posing my subjects with confidence. I keep forcing them into this fake dance pose. Some of the photos were cute despite my utter failure to pose them, but at least the venue and this gazebo were to die for.
Overall,
the experience was definitely a humbling one. I tried my best, and that's what matters. Even when you're struggling coming up with those poses, when you're struggling in front of the couple, and just staring at them with this awkward blank expression... you can't let yourself forget what you're there to do. The mission. The goal. To show the genuine connection between the two people in front of you.
It's difficult at times.
You've got to find a way through. Through the awkwardness, through the people who don't want to participate, and through the thoughts you have of your own self doubt.
One thing kept playing in my mind during this session: Am I meant to be a photographer?
The answer is a clear yes.
I love doing this. I love every genuine smile, every hidden moment, the authentic times when the couple comes out of their bubble a bit and just lets go of their inhibitions about being photographed. I love it all.
And at the end of the day, that passion is what keeps the fire inside me burning for more and more despite struggling with posing.
So some friendly advice, keep a few poses as "back pocket" poses. A few things you know will bring out the smiles, the laughter, and the playful nature of every couple. Even if it's prompts rather than poses, do your research.
Below are some more of the photos I managed to get for Corinne and Zach and I hope you enjoy them as much as Corinne did,
Just know, from a photographer to the world despite your struggles, whatever they may be, you're meant to be in this space. You're a creative. And that's the best part of when your mind goes blank. Because a blank mind just leaves more room for creativity.
Thanks for reading.
See you next session.
